Introduction to Councils

Council Requirements

Every level of Australian government has some legislation that will affect your KDRB project. In most cases, the legislation that will shape your new home the most is your local government area’s development control plans, building codes and local environment plans. Since February 2009, however, some new home owners are now able to choose to comply with the NSW Housing Code instead – please see this page for more information.

In either case, these rules will tell you how far your new home has to be from your neighbours, the street, and your back fence. They’ll also tell you how high and big your house can be. Some will even give suggestions about what your house should look like from the street.

These pages will give you advice about what websites to visit and what documents to read to know the rules that will affect your development. However, remember that these rules are subject to change, and there may be other rules that affect your specific block of land. If you have any doubts or queries, contact your council.

Double-check what council area your property is located within using the NSW Department of Local Government’s “find a council” feature.
